Board Leadership Program

Preparing you to serve in one of the most important roles at a nonprofit

The HandsOn Greater DC Cares Board Leadership Program (BLP) is dedicated to strengthening the community by training and matching qualified professionals with the boards of our nonprofit partner organizations.

During the BLP, you will learn best practices of nonprofit governance, including directors’ moral and legal obligations, financial oversight responsibilities, and fundraising techniques. HandsOn Greater DC Cares matches you to an organization by evaluating a detailed survey of your professional background and mission interests.

BLP Alumni are active in shaping and guiding the visions and missions of nonprofits across the Greater DC region, many taking leadership roles on the boards they serve.

You will gain many benefits from BLP and your nonprofit board service, including:

  • enhanced leadership and management skills
  • valuable networking opportunities
  • greater understanding and connection to the community
  • opportunities to make an impact in causes you believe in

BLP is offered quarterly and is held over two half days. More detailed logistical information is available on the training’s registration page.

BLP costs $495 for training and matching services. If you are currently serving on the board of a nonprofit organization and would like to attend the training, the cost is $295.

Please be mindful that board service is a commitment of your time, energy, and in many cases, financial support. Before participating in BLP, please consider these factors.

It’s easy to get involved. Click here to become a HandsOn Greater DC Cares volunteer. Once you complete the 15 minute online orientation and indicate your interest in skilled volunteering, we’ll send you a detailed survey about your skills and interests. We’ll also ask for your resume. Then, we’ll work to match you to an opportunity that will put your skills to work for a local nonprofit.
